ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - The St. Louis Cardinals announced plans for a $220 million expansion of Ballpark Village.

Phase Two will include a 29-story luxury hotel at Clark and Broadway. It will be the first newly-constructed office building in downtown St. Louis since metropolitan square opened in 1989. They're adding storefronts, restaurants and parking at 8th and Clark as well.

Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III calls it "a real game-changer" for the city and state. The team is asking the city to add a sales tax at Ballpark Village.

The project would create 1,000 permanent jobs and 1,500 construction jobs for work that will begin next year and wrap up by 2019.

Phase One opened in 2014, which includes the Cardinals Hall of Fame and other restaurants and shops.
