CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI) - Chesterfield police need help identifying a man who could be responsible for several vehicle thefts.

While crime numbers remain low in Chesterfield, the department said it has noticed a marked increase in vehicle thefts compared to this time last year.

The man seen in a surveillance photos provided by Chesterfield police is pictured next to one of the stolen vehicles, Det. Robert Powell said. The vehicle was located just across the river in Illinois.

“The one commonality between he and the vehicles is that we have recovered quite a few vehicles in East St. Louis,” Detective Powell said. “And the male we’re investigating, that we’re providing you a photo of, we can put him in one of the stolen vehicles in East St. Louis.”

It is unclear if the crimes are being used to commit other crimes.

Most of the cars were parked at apartment complexes before they were stolen. Police are reminding the public to exercise common sense and lock their vehicle doors. In some of the cases, vehicle doors were left unlocked, and even worse, keys were left inside the vehicles.

Detective Powell said while the public is being reminded to take basic precautions, detectives are working hard to locate the person responsible for the stolen vehicles.

“Chesterfield is--and will remain--a vibrant community. Which is why we are aggressively dealing with this issue,” he said.

Anyone with information on the man seen in the surveillance photos should contact the Chesterfield Police Department at 636-537-3000.
