Man found dead at base of JB Bridge

MONROE COUNTY, IL (KTVI)- Saturday evening, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the body of a 50-60 year-old man was found along the bank of the Mississippi River in Monroe County, IL.  Detectives are still working to discover whether the  cause of death was criminal or due to natural causes.  An autopsy will be performed.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office was releasing very little information earlier in the day, only confirming an "open investigation" to FOX 2. Numerous first responder vehicles were seen Saturday afternoon at the base of the Jefferson Barracks bridge.  The westbound lanes of I-255 were closed for a time during the investigation.

Crews from Dupo and Cahokia Police along with the Illinois State Police assisted in the investigation.

The JB Bridge, as it is more often called, connects Illinois and Missouri south of the city of St. Louis.
