ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) - The next treasurer for the State of Missouri will hail from St. Louis County, just like his predecessor.

According to an Associated Press analysis and projection after polls closed Tuesday, Republican Eric Schmitt has defeated Democrat Judy Baker in the race to succeed Clint Zweifel.

Schmitt, a State Senator from Glendale, gained a statewide profile in recent years for his work on bills to reform municipal courts and the amount of revenue that could be collected from traffic tickets. Baker, a former state lawmaker from Boone County, ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2012.

The incumbent, Clint Zweifel, a north St. Louis County native, is not seeking another term.
