ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- A stunning photograph of local moms posing with their ‘Rainbow Babies’ has gone viral. The picture, taken by photographer Alex Bolen, was posted to the Shutter Darling Photography, LLC. Facebook page on November 10th.

A ‘Rainbow Baby’ is the baby born following a miscarriage or still birth. The rainbow symbolizes the brightness and hope that follows a storm.

“A rainbow is a promise of sunshine after rain, of calm after storms, of joy after sadness, of peace after pain, of love after loss,” the post reads. The women photographed represent six out of several women who  experience pregnancy and infant loss on a daily basis.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the loss of a baby during pregnancy remains a sad reality for many families. Roughly 1% of all pregnancies are stillborn, and each year close to 24,000 babies are stillborn in the United States.

That is about the same as the number of babies who die each year during the first year of life. The CDC says it’s also more than 10 times as many deaths as the number that occur from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS.

Some moms speak out while others stay silent. Some women experience multiple losses and try for months or years during their healing process.

The post has over 22,000 likes with more than 17,000 shares.

Bolen, whose been taking professional photographs for over five years, is currently based in the Winfield Missouri area.
