BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) - Three people died Friday afternoon in a crash on IL Rt. 158 near Concordia Church Road, the Illinois State Police said.

Some residents who live near Highway 158 said it's known as the infamous "S" Curve. Residents said although tremendous improvements have been made at the intersection, they still warn drivers to use extra caution.

The crash occurred around 12:15 p.m. and involved a 2006 Ford Escape and a 2010 Chevy Colorado.

The Escape was traveling northbound while the Colorado was headed southbound. The driver of the Ford Escape crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and struck the Chevy head-on.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, as well as two passengers in the pick-up truck.

For decades, authorities said the 'S' curve has been notorious for its potential danger. Regardless of what caused this crash, police have again warned drivers that this stretch of highway demands maximum attention.

“Unfortunately, what happened this afternoon we have a lot of serious injuries and fatal crashes on this stretch of Illinois 158,” said Illinois State Trooper Calvin Dye.

All lanes of Route 158 were closed while the crash scene was cleared.
