JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KTVI) - Less than a week after taking the oath of office, Missouri Governor Eric Greitens is tackling the first major crisis of his term, declaring a state of emergency and activating the National Guard ahead of the incoming ice storm.

Gov. Greitens also ordered the Missouri Department of Transportation to deploy its entire fleet of 1,500 trucks to clear roads, bridges, and highways during the weather event.

More than 3,500 first responders would work 12-hour shifts; employee leave was cancelled for the duration of the winter storm.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services would be working to ensure seniors continue to receive the same quality of care, Greitens said. The Missouri Department of Public Safety has more than 100 generators  set up across the state to be used in hardest hit areas.
