ST. LOUIS, MO — A city worker stumbled upon a mysterious murder scene in St. Louis:  a man's body found next to car with a little dog inside. According to police, the body was found around 8:00am, a little more than an hour after a report of shots fired just a block away.

Police say the victim was lying next to a red Mazda in the alley behind Holly Avenue near Penrose in north St. Louis. The car was not running; no key in the ignition.  Police believe the victim was actually shot one block over on Athlone Avenue.  There was a report of shots fired there around 6:45 Tuesday morning.

Police found bullet casings there and near the car in the alley.  Police also found a small dog, a Shih Tzu mix, in the car - the dog wearing a 'camo' t-shirt saying 'These guns don`t have a safety.'

The victim has been identified as Vincent Patterson, 52, of the 4600 block of Pope.  They say he was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dog found in the car was turned over to animal control.
