ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A key ramp that drivers use to get onto the Poplar Street Bridge heading into Illinois is set to reopen after being closed for months. The ramp stretches from I-44 east and I-55 north downtown onto the eastbound Poplar Street Bridge.
It closed last September creating some big-time headaches for drivers. Now it is coming back soon although more work still needs to be done.
MoDOT spokesperson Drew Gates confirms for us that the plan is to reopen the ramp with one lane this Thursday before the evening rush. The reopening will likely happen sometime after noon.
MoDOT originally closed the ramp last September so it could be rebuilt and widened from one lane to two. Gates says that only one lane will be open through December. That`s when workers are expected to complete a bridge-widening project on the Poplar which will allow the bridge to handle two lanes of traffic from the 44/55 ramp.
The bridge-widening project will add one lane eastbound on the Poplar Street Bridge.
The bridge will ultimately have five lanes going into Illinois and four lanes coming into Missouri.
