Several injured during deck collapse after funeral

O'FALLON, IL - An Illinois family faces a tragic event on what had already been a difficult day. After attending a funeral, several people were injured when a residential deck collapsed.

O’Fallon Fire Chief Brent Saunders said approximately 15 people were on the second story deck at the house on Winding Creek Court when it gave way just after 9 p.m. Thursday (April 12). The group fell ten to 12 feet.

Six adults were injured, according to Saunders. One person was critically injured and five others suffered minor injuries.

O'Fallon city code enforcement officers responded to the scene and are looking into the cause of the collapse.

Saunders said the house is about 30 years old but was unsure of when the deck was built. He said portions of the deck appeared to be aged which may have contributed to the collapse.

O’Fallon police said there will not be a criminal investigation into the incident.
