SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) _ Authorities say a man has been fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with officers in a Springfield neighborhood.

Police Lt. Chris Wells says the shooting happened Monday afternoon after officers responded to a reported theft in the neighborhood. The Springfield News-Leader reports that the man’s name wasn’t immediately released. Wells says no officers were wounded.

Wells provided no other details, but neighbors described the man running through an alley, leaping fences and briefly entering a home.

Mike Lasister says the man was sitting on his living room couch and asked if he could take a rest, then bolted out the front door. His daughter-in-law, 35-year-old Deanna Buell, says she watched an officer get out of his car and pursue the suspect, who then fired shots at the police.
