ST. LOUIS – St. Louis firefighters discovered a body while responding to a fire in a vacant north city apartment building Sunday night.

The fire began just before 7 p.m. in the 8100 block of N. Broadway in the Baden neighborhood. The body was identified as Shawndale Teague, 44, of Marion, Illinois.

Firefighters contained the fire to one of two apartments on the second floor. The man's body was located in the other apartment. The St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit was called to investigate the fire.

“It’s my understanding that no one lived in the apartments…to our knowledge,” said Fire Captain Garon Mosby, St. Louis Fire Department.

The owner of the building said he's had problems with squatters in the past.
