ST. LOUIS – Authorities say a man has disappeared while swimming with two friends in the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the man vanished just after 5 p.m. Tuesday while swimming from a small beach on the Illinois side of the river near the Old Chain of the Rocks Bridge. The St. Louis Fire Department used three boats to look for the man, but suspended the search once it became dark.

Belleville, Illinois, Fire Department officials say the other two swimmers were safely out of the water, though it wasn’t clear if those swimmers were rescued or if they left the water on their own.
