Fired Missouri education commissioner gets job back

Margaret Vandeven

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missouri’s former top education official who was fired last year has gotten her job back. On Tuesday, the Missouri State Board announced that Margie Vandeven has been hired to return to her role as the state’s commissioner for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. She will begin her duties on January 2, 2019.

Vandeven was fired last year after former governor Eric Greitens stacked the State Board of Education with appointees who voted to force her out. Since Greitens’ resignation, new Gov. Mike Parson has appointed new board nominees who relaunched a search to fill the position.

Roger Dorson has been serving as interim commissioner.
