Former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner F.W. de Klerk will speak at Illinois State University this month

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) _ Former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner F.W. de Klerk will speak at Illinois State University this month.

ISU officials announced Friday that de Klerk’s presentation will be “Bridging the Gap: Globalization Without Isolation.” It will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at ISU’s Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall.

De Klerk became president of South Africa in 1989. A short time later, he released civil rights leader Nelson Mandela from prison after 27 years. Their joint efforts at reforming the country earned them the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

The event is part of the Illinois State University Speaker Series . De Klerk will offer his views on the importance of peaceful resolution to the world’s most difficult disputes.
