Hazardous material leaks on I-55 following tractor-trailer incident

PEVELY, Mo. – A hazardous material incident caused traffic delays on southbound Interstate 55 near Pevely late Tuesday afternoon.

An 18-wheeler was transporting cargo on the interstate when the load shifted and a container turned on its side and a chemical began leaking from the trailer portion of the vehicle.

Less than 55 gallons spilled in the leak and was said to be a base for another product.

Emergency crews from the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Dunklin Fire Protection District responded to the incident. The trucking company contacted a third-party company for final remediation.

No one was injured and the spill did not present a serious threat.
