ST. LOUIS – Homicide detectives with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said assault weapons were fired near a family park Thursday morning, leaving one man dead and another man wounded.
The shooting took place just after 10 a.m. at the corner of N. Taylor Avenue and Newberry Terrace, in the Lewis Place neighborhood.
Police said two men were walking down the street when a passing car began shooting at them.
“I heard bullets like piercing through the air,” said James Miller, who lives near the park.
A string of shell casings littered the scene, not far from where children had been playing. Miller said the children were ushered to safety by adults supervising them.
One man died; the other victim was taken to a hospital. They were both in their 20s. Police have not yet released the identity of the victim who died. Police did not know the condition of the man who was wounded.
Police said it’s possible two to four suspects were in a white Dodge Charger.
This was the 104th recorded homicide in the city of St. Louis this year.
“People are really shattered by all this violence, especially the young kids,” said Miller. “We don’t want them to think this is the only way to resolve something.”
Detectives said brazen crimes like this one are becoming all too common.
