JENNINGS, Mo. – Another teenager has been murdered in the St. Louis-area as a 17-year-old was shot dead in an alley in Jennings Wednesday afternoon.
According to Officer Tracy Panus, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis County Police Department, the shooting happened around 1 p.m. in the 8300 block of Strathmore Place. In addition to the calls for shots fired, police said the ShotSpotter system in the area activated.
Police arrived to find the victim's body in an alley. The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's name was not released.
Panus said two men were seen running from the scene toward West Florissant Avenue.
Police and neighbors said there was a gun battle between two groups of young people. One suspect was taken into custody; another remained at large.
There was no word of any other injuries.
Investigators could be seen placing evidence markers on the ground and recovering bullet casings on College Avenue, two blocks away from the shooting.
West Florissant from Octavia to College remained shut down for nearly four hours as police collected evidence.
One mother who lived nearby told Fox 2 her child’s school was put on lockdown as police searched for suspects.
Jennings High School and Jennings Junior High School are located nearby. District officials did not confirm a lockdown at either school.
