WASHINGTON COUNTY, Mo. – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is working to identify human remains that were discovered over the weekend in a rural part of the county.
The Lyons’ family lives near where the discovery was made. Kelli Lyons said, “It’s scary. It’s really scary not to know what in the world happened.” Her husband Richard added, “I just can’t believe it. I’ve lived out here a long time. I’ve never had trespassers on my property or anything like that. It’s really flooring me this is going on.”
According to Sheriff Zach Jacobsen, deputies were sent to the 10000 block of Rock Hill Road to investigate the possible discovery of skeletal remains. Deputies confirmed the remains were human.
Some people wonder if the human bones are from one of the people reported missing over the years. Others think it may be hunter, while others like Eric Cain think there’s little chance it was a hunter. Cain said, “They don’t let nobody on their property hunting. I’ve been run off there a couple times…if there was a hunter where’s their vehicle?”
Sheriff Jacobsen said the remains appeared to have been there for a long time, possibly years.
Resident Steve Jaycox said, “I hope they would find out what’s going on, hope they keep investigating until they do find out.”
The cause of death could not be determined and will take time because of exposure to the elements. The remains have been sent to a forensic pathologist for investigation.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the county sheriff’s office at 573-438-5478.
