ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Based on the novel by Salman Rushdie, “Shalimar the Clown,” is a new opera getting its world premiere at Opera Theatre of St. Louis this season. The heartbreaking love story is set against the backdrop of turmoil in 1960s Kashmir, a territory long-disputed by India and Pakistan.
Shalimar, a Muslim, and Boonyi, a Hindu, grow up together as performers in a traditional folk theater. They fall in love and marry. But when a new American ambassador seduces Boonyi with the promise of a new life, Shalimar heads down a path of revenge.
“Shalimar the Clown” will be performed June 11,15,17,19, 23, and 25. Tickets range from $25.00 to $129.00. All performances are at the Loretto Hilton Center at Webster University.
