(KTVI) – There’s a new health and beauty craze called, “oil pulling.”  It sounds strange but many people swear by it.  They say it pulls toxins out of their bodies and even whitens teeth and freshens breath.

Dr. Jeff Dalin from Dalin Dental talks about the trend.

Oil pulling is swishing oil in your mouth once a day for 20 minutes.  Most people prefer coconut oil because of the taste.  But other kinds of oils are being used.

It is believed that the oil absorbs toxins and bacteria in the mouth, preventing them from being absorbed into the body.   The practice is best done daily in the morning when the mouth is said to have the most bacteria.

Proponents say it can improve gum disease, toothaches, headaches, acne, eczema, sleep issues, hangovers, allergies and ulcers. Not to mention help heal cuts, whiten teeth and improve nails.
