ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-Tax season is officially here. The IRS is now accepting electronic 2015 tax returns. The agency expects to receive more than 150 million individual returns in 2016.

The 2016 tax return deadline is April 18 rather than April 15 because Washington D.C. will celebrate Emancipation Day that Friday, pushing the deadline back.

But you don’t have to wait until April to file your taxes. The sooner you file your tax return, the sooner you will get your refund. Some people, of course, will owe taxes but by filing early, you will know exactly how much you owe and will be able to financially plan for it. Also, by filing your return early, there is less of a chance someone will try to steal your identity.
