ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - No if, ands, or butts about it. Litter is a constant problem, and it begins with something as small as a butt...a cigarette butt. Rachel Witt, Executive Director of South Grand Community Improvement District, and Laura Allers-Lower, Event Coordinator of St. Louis Earth Day, can agree.

They reveal that one in five littered items is a cigarette, making cigarette butts the most littered item worldwide. It's estimated that 3.5 trillion cigarette filters or roughly 1.79 billion pounds of waste is littered globally, filled with toxic chemicals from tobacco smoke, make their way into our environment as discarded waste yearly.

South Grand will be partnering with St. Louis Earth Day`s Recycling On the Go, which is the region`s first large-scale event greening program, working throughout the St. Louis region since 2006. Their goal is to reduce the negative environmental impact of events and festivals by reducing and recycling a portion of the waste generated and now assisting with business district`s cigarette waste.
