In 2001, FOX 2's April Simpson lost her cousin Derrick Craig to Sickle-Cell Disease. He was just 19 years old. FOX 2's Kim Hudson shared how blood donations bought her family more time with her late sister, Michael Kara "Miki" Hudson. In 2008, Miki died at age 25 -- also from complications related to Sickle-Cell Disease.
Kevin Sneed, of the American Red Cross in St. Louis, urged everyone -- regardless of race -- to donate at a special blood drive this weekend.
The drive is in honor of Dr. Charles Drew, an African-American doctor who helped develop large blood banks during World War II. The men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is hosting the drive. You can even make an appointment online at http://www.redcrossblood.org/make-donation
