ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The American Heart Association has released new guidelines for the recommended daily sugar intake, and these guidelines just might call for a change in your child’s diet.
While children ages 0 to 2 should consume no added sugars, according to the American Heart Association, children 2 to 18 years old are recommended to consume no more than 6 teaspoons or approximately 100 calories of added sugars.
This means that children and teens should have no more than 8 ounces of a sugar-sweetened beverage per week. But sadly, this is not the reality for most kids. Currently, the average child is consuming anywhere from 13 to 22 teaspoons of added sugars each day.
Dietitian Jen McDaniel with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics stopped by FOX 2 this morning to discuss three ways we can kick this sugar addiction.
- Keep sugar-rich foods out of sight
- Focus on fruit: Children are born with the innate desire for sweet tasting foods, but we can train their tastebuds to enjoy the natural sweetness from fruit over concentrated sweets like candy.
- Don`t deprive: The guidelines for 2-18 year olds suggest ~100 calories/day in added sugars. Removing sugar entirely will only increase cravings. Remember to keep sugar in your diet, just in the right proportions.
