WEST ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KTVI)- Sexual violence is a very serious public health problem that affects millions of women and men . According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men have been raped in their lifetime or have experience other forms of sexual abuse. Many victims do not disclose sexual violence . Two local sisters say they are survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Latonya Buford and Dionna Latimer wanted to share their story with others.
The sisters started Moving4Ward Ministries , Inc. to help end the silence behind sexual abuse and encourage survivors on their road to healing. One out of every three girls and one out of every six boys will experience some form of sexual abuse before they reach the age of 18. Some victims never tell. Moving4ward Ministries is committed to ending the silence behind sexual abuse through its encouragements of victims and survivors. Moving4ward started with a 30 year old secret that two local sisters say they could no longer keep hidden. The secret was finally broken and exposed to their family members. Little did they know this would change the course of their lives forever.
After finally disclosing this disturbing information, so many other people began to tell their secrets as well. The two sisters began speaking publicly about their abuse and slowly became free of this bondage. The victims wanted to share their message regarding healing after being sexually abused . They have have been featured in many magazines and newspapers publications across the country.
Moving4ward is combined of six women. They group meets on a monthly basis and each lady in the group have dealt with some type of abuse. Some of the members have suffered from domestic violence. Although none of them are licensed therapists or professional counselors, Moving4ward was created to be a support ministry where they encourage and show love and support for each other. Moving4ward's motto is "Your Voice Has a Right To Be Heard."
The group will hold their first annual "Stroll To Heal The Soul Walk Saturday , April 27, 2013 in Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park ( Tremayne Pavilion) 2143 Creve Coeur Mill Road Saint Louis, Mo 63146. The walk starts 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can support and celebrate Survivors of sexual abuse and encourage them that THEIR VOICE HAS A RIGHT TO BE HEARD, and they can overcome anything!
