(KTVI) – Cinnamon can do much more than just spice up plain old toast. It can also help what ails you.

Carol Hurst with Olde Town Spice Shoppe in St. Charles explains the benefits of cinnamon and how to distinguish between different kinds of the spice.

Different kinds of cinnamon:

Cassia- popular in the US, inexpensive, not true Cinnamon
Ceylon- refined and subtle in taste, harder to find; true cinnamon
Saigon/Vietnamese- fragrant and sweeter
Gets its flavor from the essential oils in the bark. .5-1%

Cinnamon Steak Rub Recipe:
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp oregano leaves
1.5 tsp paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground red pepper
2 lbs worth of steak

Combine all the spices. Rub the spice mixture evenly on both sides of the steak, cover loosely and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Grill over medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until done the way you desire.
