Major Case Squad investigates murder of Belleville teen

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is investigating the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old in Belleville.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. near West Washington Street and South 62nd Street Wednesday. The victim, identified as Demauryon Smith, was shot in the torso.

Police said Smith’s friend drove him to Belleville Memorial Hospital. He was then airlifted to a St. Louis hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Before Smith left the Belleville Hospital, he was alert and spoke to detectives.

“When our officers met him at the hospital he was able to tell them a wealth of information about what happened,” Belleville Police Assistant Chief Matt Eiskant said. “It wasn’t up to an hour later is when he was declared deceased. So in the meantime, he gave us a lot of information that we’re following up on now.”

Eiskant is also the Deputy Commander of the Major Case Squad.

About 20 Major Case Squad detectives have been actively speaking with witnesses. Investigators are not commenting on a motive for the shooting.
