2.4 Million Credit, Debit Cards Hacked at Schnucks Markets

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The Schnucks grocery store chain released new information Monday on the cyber attack that has impacted thousands of customers.  The length of the attack and number of credit card numbers compromised appears to be greater than most thought.  Schnucks says about 2.4 million numbers many have been stolen.

In a video statement recorded by the company with CEO Scott Schnuck, the first thing offered was an apology.

“First I want to take the opportunity to personally apologize on behalf of the entire Schnuck family,” he said.

Schnuck went on to say there were limits to the information that fell in the wrong hands.

“The only transaction information accessed was card numbers and expiration dates.  No cardholder names addresses or other identifying information were taken,” Schnuck said.

Seventy-nine of the company’s 100 stores had information stolen in a period between December 10, 2012 and March 29, 2013.  For most of that time, Schnucks was unaware of the thefts.

In an email, spokesperson Lori Willis said, “The unfortunate reality of cyber-attacks is that they often go unnoticed for months.”

An anecdotal reflection of how widespread the damage is came in the parking lot of the company’s Des Peres store, Monday.  Fox 2 approached three customers to get reaction to this story, and two of them had had their information compromised in recent weeks.

One of the victims, Chris Martin, called the 2.4 million number “staggering,” and said she finds the whole thing worrisome.

“Sure it does, not only here at Schnucks but elsewhere, especially online and stuff.  It’s hard to feel confident any more that everything is secure.”

Joe Antosek, meanwhile, says he’s not worried about it.

“I don’t think anything of it and I’ll tell you why.  Because these folks have been really good,” he said, pointing to the store.   “Hey, everybody gets hacked.  In today’s society it’s just a way of life.”

Schnuck, meanwhile, was assuring customers that the problem is behind them.

“I have been asked is it safe to shop at Schnucks?  The answer is yes, we believe it is.  I give you my personal pledge that we will be relentless in working to keep it safe,” Schnuck said.

Company officials continue to refuse to allow reporters to speak in person with the CEO and ask questions.

Schnucks says cards used at compromised stores between December 2012 and the end of March 2013 may have card numbers and expiration dates stolen.

Schnucks has been working with banks to identify cards that might have been compromised so each institution can take steps to secure the cards. Many banks have already started replacing cards and enhancing monitoring of accounts.

Reports of scammers calling, emailing and texting customers and asking for personal information are starting to be reported.  No one from Schnucks or any investigating police department will call, text or email you and ask for personal information.  Do not give out your personal information to anyone who calls, texts, or emails you.

About FOX 2 News

FOX 2 and KPLR 11 in St. Louis cover the news in Missouri and Illinois. There are over 68 hours of live news and local programming on-air each week. Our website and live video streams operate 24/7. Download our apps for alerts and follow us on social media for updates in your feed.

President Harry Truman said: “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” That spirit is alive and well at Fox 2. Our teamwork is on display each and every day.

Our news slogan is: “Coverage You Can Count On.” We quite frankly are too busy to worry about who gets the credit. Our main concern is serving the viewer.

We go where the stories take us. Whether it be Washington, D.C when a Belleville man opened fire during a congressional baseball game practice or to Puerto Rico where local Ameren crews restored power after more than 5 months in the dark.

Coverage You Can Count On means “Waking up your Day” with our top-rated morning show. From 4:00 am-10:00 am we are leading the way with breaking news. But our early morning crew also knows how to have some fun! Our strong commitment to the communities we serve is highlighted with our Friday neighborhood shows.

Our investigative unit consists of three reporters. Elliott Davis focuses on government waste, Chris Hayes is our investigative reporter, and Mike Colombo is our consumer reporter. They work in unison with the news department by sharing resources and ideas.

We continue to cover breaking news aggressively and relied on our seasoned journalists to make a difference with the stories we covered. The shooting of Arnold Police Officer Ryan O’Connor is just one example of that. Jasmine Huda was the only reporter who had exclusive access to the O’Connor family during his amazing rehabilitation in Colorado.

Last, but certainly not least, FOX 2 and KPLR 11 are committed to covering local politics. We host debates among candidates and have the most extensive presidential election coverage. Our commitment to politics isn’t just during an election year. We produce two political shows that air every weekend.
