ST. CLAIR (KTVI) - A woman has died and a man is in critical condition after a pedestrian involved accident in Franklin County.

It happened Tuesday night shortly after 8 pm on North Outer Road, west of Missouri State Highway WW.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, a woman was driving west bound when she realized that she had hit something.

Police said the driver turned around to inquire what happened.

They said that's when she saw a woman lying on the road with a man standing over her. Just as the driver was assessing the scene police said another driver in a pickup also traveling westbound hit the man standing over the woman knocking him into the middle of the road.

Police didn't say why the 30-year-old-man and the 35-year-old woman were on the road or how she died.

Both drivers stayed on the scene.

The man was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur.

Police did not release the names of those involved as they continue to investigate.
