ST. LOUIS – A three-year-old girl was shot Saturday afternoon on Interstate 70 just north of downtown St. Louis.

According to police, the shooting occurred on westbound I-70 near Union Boulevard around 4:30 p.m.

The child was struck in the leg while riding in a black Dodge Magnum. The driver got the car to a nearby BP gas station and contacted authorities. The child was transported to the hospital for treatment.

For more than hour after responding to the scene, police collected evidence from inside and outside the vehicle. According to our news partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the bullet that injured the child was fired from outside the vehicle.

As of Sunday morning, the three-year-old was said to be in stable condition.

At this point, it’s unclear the relationship between the driver of the vehicle and the child.
