HILLSBORO, MO (KTVI) – Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department say 3 dogs have turned up with gunshot wounds during the past couple of days.

Two of those dogs belong to Lindsey and Derek Dunne.  They live in Dittmer and say their 2 labs ran off their front porch this past weekend.  One returned home Saturday with a gunshot wound.  The other dog was recovered by Animal Control.

Lindsey Dunne says she asked her vet if it appeared her dogs had been in fight or encountered another animal.

“He said no, it purely looks like he was just shot,” said Lindsey Dunne.   “My fear is that this is a target practice.”

Investigators say it’s possible the dogs were shot in self-defense or in an effort to protect livestock.  There are farms in the area.  Investigators say Animal Control recovered a third wounded dog that appeared to be a stray.

The Dunnes received a voice mail Saturday saying one of their dogs had been found and could be picked up Sunday afternoon.  The Dunnes say they were not notified the dog was wounded.

“Once we got there, we realized she had gunshot wounds,” said Derek Dunne.

Anyone with information about the wounded dogs can contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department at 636-797-5000.
