ST. LOUIS COUNTY – The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office as charged 27-year-old Demetrius Cole of Florissant in the death of a 4-year-old killed in a hit and run Friday night in North St. Louis County. Cole has been charged with murder second degree and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury. Police say the toddler was killed and another was injured after being hit by a vehicle being driven by Cole.
The incident happened a little before 9:30 p.m. on Friday at Chambers Road and Clairmont Drive. When officers arrived, they saw that two children had been hit by a car. The kids, a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, were in a stroller being pushed by their mother when they were hit.
Both children were taken to the hospital. The 4-year-old, Tavares Chisholm, was later pronounced dead. The 2-year-old is being treated for leg fractures.
Police say video from the area showed the 2016 Nissan Altima traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Chambers Road when it struck the children. At the time of the accident, the vehicle did not have its headlights on and that the car did not stop or brake when it struck the children’s stroller.
The vehicle was later recovered and Cole admitted to police that he had been driving the vehicle, but that car had been stolen prior to the collision. Cole stated he did not report the car theft, nor could he describe who stole it and the location where the vehicle was stolen from.
Cole’s license is currently revoked, and he has had previous revocation violations. He also has a DWI case pending St. Louis County Circuit Court and is currently on parole for a weapons violation.
Cole is being held at the St. Louis County Justice Center on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
An investigation is ongoing.
