ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - St. Louis police are investigating a shooting in north city after an infant was wounded in the foot overnight.
The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Aldine Avenue and Billups, in The Ville neighborhood. Investigators believe the five-month-old victim was riding in the backseat of a vehicle when the shots were fired. The child was transported to the hospital and remains listed in stable condition.
Community leaders and residents find the incident very disturbing, considering someone so innocent was caught in the middle of violence.
Missouri State Senator Jamilah Nasheed called the shooting alarming.
“My heart really goes out to those who lost their lives to gun violence,” she said. “I don’t believe the Amendment 5 that we passed last year … what you are seeing happen in the St. Louis area to date you have violent criminals that are able to go purchase guns.”
Residents who live in the area said enough is enough.
“We need to stop all this stuff and violence on babies. We need to come together,” said resident Sheryl Prime. “It's always communities like this, abandoned buildings; we must come together.”
State Sen. Nasheed said now is the time for the community to wake up and take action.
“It is very important that anyone who knows anything about a violent crime to come forward,” she said.
James Clark, Better Family Life spokesman, said stakeholders must now take a different approach.
“St. Louis must realize that the approach that we have been taking, we have to now go into our more challenged neighborhoods and embrace the families and the individuals who have found no way to engage resources,” he said.
The shooting remains under investigation and police have not identified any suspects.
