A former school teacher charged earlier this month with sexually abusing a child now faces new charges involving seven other victims. Madison County State`s Attorney Tom Gibbons filed the latest accusations against 38-year old Jason Ehlers of Bethalto, IL on Friday . Ehlers is accused of 18 criminal counts, some involving children under the age of 13.
Ehlers resigned from his teaching position in the Triad School District in Troy, IL after his initial arrest. He is being held in the Madison County Jail on bonds totally $500,000.
Bethalto police investigators have determined none of the victims were his current or former students, but all of the victimized children knew Ehlers before the abuse occurred. Court documents indicate the abuse stretched from 2010 to the current month of April.
State`s Attorney Gibbons issued a statement saying, "When someone victimizes children, it must be dealt with swiftly and severely so that they will no longer be able to prey upon our kids." He noted April is Child Abuse Prevention month. "We remain particularly mindful of the devastating impact of abuse on children," Gibbons wrote.
Anyone with information about similar child sex abuse cases should contact their local police department or Crimestoppers.
