PHOENIX (AP) _ Arizona Sen. John McCain is feeling the heat from some Republican voters angry that he pulled his support from presidential candidate Donald Trump over a 2005 recording of Trump making crude comments about women.
McCain faces a challenge from Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick as he seeks a sixth term. Polls show him ahead as Election Day nears. He’s maintaining that lead even after recent polls indicate Hillary Clinton has a chance of winning the conservative state for Democrats for the first time since 1996.
McCain is confident enough to campaign for other GOP Senate candidates across the nation while mainly avoiding the media in Arizona.
Kirkpatrick says McCain has changed for the worse after 33 years in Washington. McCain has criticized her for backing President Barack Obama’s health care law.
