Kirkwood puts all schools on lockdown as precaution

KIRKWOOD, MO (KTVI) - All schools in the Kirkwood School District were placed on lockdown Wednesday morning. Kirkwood High School was on a hard lockdown for about an hour and a half. All extra security measures have been lifted.

Kirkwood Police say the security concerns were raised after they received a 911 call. They traced the call to the area of Kirkwood High School.

Police say they overheard people talking on the open line about retaliation for an earlier disturbance. They don't know the identity of the person who placed the call or the subjects overheard talking.

School officials were asking parents to not pick up students at Kirkwood High School. The was school on lockdown and no one could go in or out of the building.

The lockdown was lifted for all schools in the district at around 11:30am. School officials extended the lockdown at Kirkwood High School for about a half hour to wrap things up.

The Kirkwood School District says all students are safe and the school day has resumed. Investigators say there is no threat against any students or Kirkwood School District staff members.

There will be officers on Kirkwood School District campuses for the remainder of the day.

Official statement from the Kirkwood School District:

Dear KSD Family and Staff Members,

On Wednesday, April 27, the Kirkwood Police began investigating a 911 phone call received in dispatch at the Kirkwood Police Department. The call was from a cell phone that called 911 and the line was left open. The subjects on the open line were heard discussing retaliation for an earlier disturbance. It is unknown where the disturbance occurred or the identity of the subjects that were talking. The phone was tracked to the area of Kirkwood High School and as a precaution; Kirkwood School District officials were advised to place Kirkwood High School on lockdown and all other schools on lockout. At this time there is no credible threat against any student or staff member.

Kirkwood Police have concluded their investigation and determined there is no danger. All schools in the Kirkwood School District have resumed their normal school activities. Extra police cars will be on campuses the remainder of the day.

For clarification regarding communication today:

During this time, there was a brief window when Keysor was thought to be on lockdown due to the proximity to the KHS campus. However, there category was changed to lockout by police and the rest of KSD schools were placed on lockout.

As a reminder:

Lockdown means no one can come in and out of a building. Students and staff remain in their classrooms and no one is in the hallway. Lockout means normal activities are happening in the schools. However, no one is allowed to enter the building.
