ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – An outspoken former congressman is speaking at St. Louis University Thursday evening and students are responding with a sugary protest. Retired Army Lt. Col. Allen West will speak as a guest of the conservative student group Young America’s Foundation.
The newly formed student group Cupcakes Against Hate, whose name drew inspiration from West’s own words, is collecting donations for homemade cupcakes to benefit a charity for refugees in St. Louis ahead of the West’s 7 p.m. speaking engagement.
The initial flyers promoting West’s appearance included the word’s “radical Islam,” but university leaders frowned on that terminology. Student opponents have been taking all the fliers down. West called the university’s stance and the removal of the flyers a form of censorship, and called student opponents “little cupcakes” in need of a “safe space” where they don’t have to hear opposing views. SLY’s president also slammed West for suggesting that SLU’s Muslim Student Association was a stealth jihad organization.
