EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) _ A prosecutor says an Alton police officer is suspected of destroying evidence in as many as 130 pending cases.

Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons says a grand jury indicted 38-year-old Jonathan Forrler on Thursday. He’s charged with a felony count of official misconduct over the destruction of evidence in a sexual assault case.

Forrler had been the Alton Police Department’s evidence officer until it was discovered in July that evidence dating to last year in criminal cases had been discarded.

Gibbons’ statement did not specify a possible motive.

It wasn’t clear to what extent the evidence destruction has affected prosecutions.

Forrler doesn’t have a listed home telephone number and could not be reached for comment. Online court records do not show whether he has an attorney.
