Alton residents race to save community from rising water

ALTON, IL (KTVI) - Volunteers in Alton say they are prepared to do whatever it takes to protect the town. They’re expected to be here throughout the night, as they fill thousands of sandbags and hope for the best.

Older residents say it’s a reminder of the floods that hit the city back in the ‘70s and ‘90s.

City officials expect the water to crest on New Year’s Eve. Volunteers say they will be ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store.
