ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- Julie Malone has an art, even when it's from not your average artist.

"They {are} similar to us, not necessarily to you being color blind," says Julie Malone, the owner SOHA Studio & Gallery.  "But they do see like we do.  We are also primates."

That's right; the primary colors on these walls were put there by primates from the St. Louis Zoo.

Malone's SOHA Studio and Gallery in South St. Louis is displaying the artwork until Saturday.

"So that's the chimpanzee, the orangutan and gorilla," says Malone.

Photographer Jess Dewes has taken portraits of the ape artistes next to their canvas creations.

"Part of their enrichment activities is to paint," says Malone.  "What better way than to spend the arts and humanities together for a great cause."

Proceeds from the sales of the paintings will go to the zoo's ape conservation efforts and the Goualougo Triangle Ape Project, which does research work in the Congo.

This collection is anything but ordinary for this gallery.

"We promote not only the work but the artist themselves so we'll do a biography of each artists," says Malone.  "Artists come to SOHA Gallery and exhibit and they'll give lectures and talk about their work.  We couldn't really bring the apes in."

But the public can go to the paintings, and who knows, you might find the next Vincent Van Go-rilla in the midst of all these canvases.

"These animals are endangered," says Malone.  "They're in need of humans to help them support their living environments and this is the best way I can do it living here in St. Louis."

She continued, "These paintings, we can put them in our homes and officesand they become conversation pieces and encourage discussions about animals.  For me it's just a great way of doing our part in this world we live in and create awareness."

At the end of the day, it's art withappeal, an original composition from a king of the jungle.
