ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The Gateway City also has a big lead problem. It’s not lurking in the water, it’s lurking in the paint in many older homes.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that at least 3,300 kids in St. Louis have toxic levels of lead in their blood. Too much lead can lead to developmental delays, learning disabilities, stunted growth and other health problems.
Almost 90-percent of the housing in St. Louis was built before 1978 when lead paint was banned.
Even if homes are repainted, disturbing walls and windows can dislodge paint chips and dust.
