DALLAS, TX. (CNN) – Big changes are coming to American Airlines. The bankrupt airline is close to a merger deal with U-S Airways.  Monika Diaz has the story.

In the letter from American Airlines to its employees, the airline laid out its new message. Its strong financial performance and tentative agreements with the pilots and transport workers unions set the stage to explore other opportunities. A potential merger.

We understand our revenues and costs going better than forward.  We have a better base to judge things by. Now, it’s the appropriate time to look at strategic alternatives.

For the allied pilots association, the letter’s message is clear. A merger is the carrier’s only option. The APA says there’s only one candidate for the job us airways.

It’s really an admission of failure on the corporation’s stand alone plan. They recognize that a merger with US Airways represents a solution to the revenue and network disparities at American Airlines.

The airline did not want to give us details on the partners it will approach. And, it’s still holding on to the possibility that it can survive bankruptcy on its own.

Nobody has a crystal ball. I can tell you this, American Airlines will be successful in the future whichever way it goes and those passengers will have a great airline to fly and the employees will have a great airline to work for.
