ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- “Getting down to business.”
Better Family Life, Inc. is presenting a youth empowerment rally tour now through Friday, May 20th. “Getting Down 2 Business” is giving thousands of local students, in grades six through 12, the opportunity to learn about teen pregnancy prevention, how to avoid HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and staying away from drugs.
Participating schools hosting the rally include East St. Louis Senior High School (with Mason Clark Middle School attending), Carr Lane VPA Middle School, Yeatman Liddell Middle School, Soldan International Studies High School, Roosevelt High School and Langston Middle School.
The rally’s final stop will be held at at Better Family Life located at 5415 Page Boulevard.
“We want to unite young people and go to war on drugs, STDs, and violence. Bringing these kids together at these rallies will not only provide a great time, but will provide them with much needed information about how to deal with real life situations that can be prevented,” said Miranda Jones., vice president of Youth, Family, and Clinical Services for Better Family Life.
Participants should expect to see a video presentation, discussion and a musical presentation by a local musical performers Ricky Rock and Jamal “Yaya” Jonez.
The company’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Project launched in 2008. Since then, the agency has almost doubled the size of the program serving approximately 1,600 students in 22 schools per year with evidence-based curriculum, and an additional 2,000 students with supplemental activities including this annual rally, a Youth Leadership Academy and other various outreach efforts.
Ninety-eight percent of those served by Better Family Life are African-American students who live in poverty. The agency serves 28 zip codes in St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Clair County in Illinois.
