FENTON, Mo. (AP) – A teenager from suburban St. Louis has died after his bicycle was struck by a tractor-trailer on an interstate highway.

The accident happened just before 1 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 44 in southwest St. Louis County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the victim as 19-year-old Kevin Purcell of Imperial. He died Wednesday night.

Patrol spokesman Al Nothum says the tractor-trailer was traveling east and because of poor lighting, the driver did not see that Purcell’s bike was in the same lane. The collision knocked Purcell and his bike off the roadway.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the bicycle was traveling on the interstate.
