ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- The push for better mental health care particularly in the wake of several mass shootings could find a successful model in the St. Louis region.

There's a startling statistic, less than a 1/3 of Americans with diagnosable mental illness actually get treatment.

But by offering both physical and mental health care services in the same building, patients are more likely to get the psychiatric help they need.

Community health centers like the People's Health Center on Delmar provide such care.

Missouri U.S. Senator Roy Blunt toured the facility Friday and told reporters the concept makes sense.

He thinks it could be expanded at a cost of about $2 million per state.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon is also calling for more state spending on mental health care, some $10 million in the coming budget.
