ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Medium Security Institution or the workhouse is on track to close for good.

The St. Louis Board of Aldermen have given their final approval to close the jail.

The money saved by closing the workhouse would help create a neighborhood safety fund and pay for a program to keep inmates from becoming repeat offenders.

The bill now goes to St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson’s desk for approval.
