EAST ST. LOUIS, IL. (KTVI) - It looked like a car fire at first. It ended up being an apparent murder scene in East St. Louis.

The Major Case Squad has been activated.

Detectives set a command post at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center Monday night.

The scene crime scene was across town, fairly hidden, even though it was in the heart of the city.

It was along a set of old railroad tracks, surrounded by trees, off of 18th Street, near Broadway.

Here's the police account:  there's an ambulance depot nearby; around 3:00 Monday afternoon, a couple of people going to work there noticed smoke billowing up from behind the tree line;  they called the fire department;  firefighters found a 1990's Buick on fire and put it out;  authorities then found what appeared to be a man’s body in the trunk.

His name and age were not known, Monday night.

There was no word on whether the man died in the fire or was killed earlier.

There's an autopsy scheduled Tuesday morning which should provide more answers.

If you have any information call the Major Case Squad via East St. Louis Police.
