(KTVI) – An animal rights group claims responsibility for vandalizing the popular butter cow at the Iowa State Fair.

They poured red paint over the sculpture, claiming it represents the blood of 11 billion animals slaughtered each year.

Members of the group "Iowans for Animal Liberation" admit hiding in the building until it closed, then dumping the paint.

Fair officials got right to work with the original sculptor and had the display cleaned up before visitors arrived the next day.
