PINE LAWN, MO (KTVI) - A 22 year old pregnant woman was run down by an impaired driver in Pine Lawn Wednesday night.  She is expected to survive, but the baby’s prognosis is uncertain.

It was just before 4:30pm when the driver, in a Mitsubishi S-U-V, was driving north on Jennings Station Road.  Police say witnesses had seen the man driving erratically moments earlier.  He lost control of the truck, running the woman completely over as she waited for a bus on the corner of Jennings Station and Vetter.  He crashed through the brick wall of a day care center across the street.  The center is currently out of business.

“I heard the impact and I had no idea what it was. I thought somebody had kicked the door in. I really didn’t know,” witness Angela Shannon said.

Another woman had just turned off Jennings Station ahead of the wreck, and was the first to reach the injured woman.

“While the lady was laying down I heard somebody hollering and I ran down there to her and set there with here and called the police and the ambulance,” Antoinette Hester said of the frenzied moments after the crash.  “She was like very in bad pain.  And by that time I looked up in that truck and looked up at the man and he looked like he was having a seizure or something real bad, and by that time the police came and pulled him out of the car and did what they had to do.”

Police said the man appeared to be impaired in some way.  They’re not sure if it was alcohol or drugs, and they’re not ready to rule out the possibility it was some kind of health issue.  There was a scuffle at the time of the arrest, and police are still trying to figure out why.

“There was a language barrier,” Sgt. Steven Blakeney of the Pine Lawn Police said.  “It was unclear whether he didn’t understand what was going on.  He was just in an accident, or he was resisting.”

By Wednesday night, Immigration and Customs Enforcement had filed a 48 hour hold on the man, who they say is in the country illegally.

The woman was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital where she was listed as stable Wednesday night.  There was no word on how far along her pregnancy was or the condition of the child.
